Workshops and Workbooks
The research of the Easy Voter Guide Project shows that new voters need help:
-
understanding the voting process and the choices they have
-
feeling comfortable with the issues
A voting workshop is an excellent way to help people feel comfortable with the process and the issues. Here are resources to help you:
- a step-by-step interactive workshop outline by the Easy Voter Guide Project (accompanied by video clips)
- the Voting is as Easy as 1-2-3 handout makes a good outline for a shorter voting workshop
- the New Citizen’s Vote workshop available in English, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese and Korean
- free Easy Voter Guides
People in your area want to help you succeed with your workshop. Contact:
-
your county elections office to see if they can provide you with an opportunity to practice with the voting equipment (some counties will send outreach staff to your workshop)
-
the local League of Women Voters chapter; many will provide a speaker about the ballot measures
-
other groups in your area who are distributing Easy Voter Guides and may want to partner with you;
For small group and one-on-one tutoring, you can also download the How to Vote Workbook, produced by the Easy Voter Guide Project and written by adult literacy students for their peers. This 16-page workbook takes the Voting is as easy as 1-2-3 approach and turns it into a learning activity. The workbook includes photos and easy-to-follow information about the voting process, along with activities to promote dialogue about the issues.
